Subject: Suitable time controls on the internet

While I've always liked and enjoyed chess, I've never been a strong player. I've found that I tend to freeze up under time pressure so I've been playing alot of correspondence chess and have improved to the point where I'm ready to try some live games. I have an account at FICS and was wondering what type of time controls is appropriate. 5 and 10 minute games are definately out and although I would be comfortable with an hour I suspect I would have a hard time finding opponents. Would there be any problem getting games with 30 minute time controls? So far I've only played the bot there so it didnt really matter. Thanks in advance.

No, no & never. The thing here chippy-boy is that these erstwhile Malaysian, chess playing, train-travelling chess-guns are a well known artifact to the cognizant - hey! they'll even give you head if you have a few spare kroner..

The thing to do is watch for FICS tournaments with longer time controls. There are a number of them with 20 minute controls, which is at least an improvement on blitz. There is also a weekly tourney with 45 minute controls. And you can look into the 45 45 league, and the Slow Time Control Bunch which sponsors weekly 60 minute games. There are definitely opportunities for relatively longer games, you just have to grab them. Another good option is, depending where you live, to look for a local chess club and get involved. Live over the board play is a much different experience and well worth the time and effort. Most communities of any size have some sort of club. Oh, I would recommend that you skip GitClub. Sanny spams all over the place whenever anyone asks for advice on where to play or how to learn.

Whats your Rating??? First improve your game Once you play stronger Time will not be a big problem. Personnaly I like playing 15 min Game. Play Chess at: http://www.GetClub.com/Chess.html If you are less than 1800 Play with Beginner Level [5-10 sec / move] If you are less than 1900 Play with Beginner Level [30-40 sec/ move] If you are less than 2000 Play with Normal Level [1-2 sec / move] 99% of the players are beaten by Beginner Level itself.
