Does anyone else remember the Rabar opening index? I can't remember much about it. I am pretty sure it was meant to be an alternative to the ECO codes. Did it just die out or is it still in use somewhere?

Ah, yes. The OC does have an entry on it. though it does not say much: Rabar Classification: a mtehod of indexing openings introduced in Chess Informant in 1966, and gradually gaining wider acceptance until it was inexplicably abandoned in 1981. The Yugoslav player and author Braslav Rabar (1919-1973) tried to devise a method related to the practical needs of play and opening study, without seeking to bolster obsolescent jargon.

It was a predecessor of ECO codes, used by Chess Informant until 1981: R0-R9 (razni=miscellaneous opening moves) E0-E9 (e2-e4) D0-D9 (d2-d4) See The Oxford Companion (http://books.google.com.ar/books? ei=vo5_SaemBZWyyQSNlICQBg&id=160YAAAAIAAJ&dq=whyld&q=braslav&pgis=1).

I thought ECO codes were Rabars but looks like I'm wrong.

I did an online search for "rabar opening index" and got only one hit, on a listing for the Montreal 1979 tournament book, by Tal, Chepizhny and Roshal.
