At the risk of being shamelessly self-promotional, I would like to
recommend the new edition of "Lasker's Manual of Chess":

http://www.uscfsales.com/item.asp?cID=3D0&PID=3D840

This is a 21st-century edtion of an instructional classic,
translated into figurine algebraic from the old descriptive notation.
I edited this edition, but of course all credit belongs to the great
Emanuel Lasker.

Another instructional classic I always recommend is Irving Chernev's
"Logical Chess: Move by Move." I probably learned more about chess
from it than from any other single book. A more modern book using the
same approach (annotating every single move of every game) is
"Understanding Chess Move by Move" by GM John Nunn.

Hi Ernie,

I use two of them.

For the student: Chess Workbook for Children
For the Teacher: Teaching Chess in the 21st Century

These are a matched pair

Author: Todd Bardwick

They are also matched-math curricula - so for example, a 2nd grade
rubric of ed sills is shown, with corresponding aspects of the book.

Publisher: Chess Detective Press

www.ColoradoMasterChess.com

I know Todd, he is a good guy, also runs huge summer camps out West
for chess [Rocky Mountain Chess Camp] and he also runs Chess Academy
of Denver.

Retail cost each book is $19.95

If you have trouble getting hold of him or the books, email me, I have
a bunch of both titles.

Cordially, Phil Innes
