Joel Channing finally carried out his often made threat or promise to resign as follows: In a message dated 4/10/2008 6:37:28 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, CHESSJOEL writes: I hereby resign my position as director of the US Chess Federation. Joel Channing

Channing clearly intended to resign his position on the EB. The only circumstance under which this silly quibble would be of any significance would be if he showed up at the next Board meeting and tried to vote. The probability of this approaches zero, and in any case would be of concern only to the other EB members.

That's just the tip of the Kenneth Sloan Wankery Iceberg. For example, telling people he doesn't like to "please stop crossposting" while ignoring crssposting by those who he likes, and while himself crossposting to rec.games.chess.politics, rec.games.chess.misc, alt.chess, misc.legal, and rec.games.chess.computer. For another example, run the webpage at http://www.cis.uab.edu/sloan/ through the validator at http://validator.w3.org/ and see what happens. In fact, even his shortest web pages have errors. Consider this one: http://www.cis.uab.edu/sloan/ChessGames/ Which has this source:

Selected Chess Games

Selected Chess Games

Here are a few interesting chess games:
Sloan vs. Sloan - 2007 US Open

Kenneth Sloan
Last modified: 4 August 2007

Let's see... Closing
with no opening
. A naked "Last modified: 4 August 2007" comment line with no <!-- -- > comment tags around it.

pair without a
in the middle. No Character Encoding. A DOCTYPE that claims it is is written in HTML 2.0 (See http://htmlhelp.com/design/dtd/ ) but has five errors when validated with the Doctype set to HTML 2.0 (See http://validator.w3.org/ ). BTW, the URL it links to also has validation erros: http://www.cis.uab.edu/sloan/ChessGames/SloanVsSloan/ And, of course, inconsistant indenting that would be marked down as being incorrect if any of his students did it. Pretty impressive list of errors for a mere 18 lines of markup! (X-No-Archive: yes set to avoid leaving a permanent record of the above in the archives.)

What was the opening, who was the opponent, and what did Fritz say about his position? There was a time when "resign" meant something a little different in chess, and Goichberg was just a big-money organizer. L'ENVOI <Joel Channing finally carried out his often made threat or promise to resign. > -- Sam Sloan As Thomas Jefferson said, "Our last resource is resignation." I want to think that Joel Channing tipped over his political king because he was bored and appalled beyond human bearing with Executive Board meetings. Imagine having to endure Bill Goichberg wearing those thick glasses or Randy Hough fidgeting like a sprayed cockroach that never dies or Randy Bauer's cheek muscles involuntarily twitching for hours. The whole comedy is completely over the top. No one who is free, white and 21 -- as the phrase used to go -- should have to tolerate this kind of indecency. And so, the Clamp let go. One has difficulty imagining Joel Channing returning immediately to his business or even his family. Like the monkish pillar-hermits circa AD 400, he may require a period of moral reflection and possibly sublime ontological speculation amid a far vista. USCF retreats lack the rigors that St. Simeon Stylites faced, and there is likely little room in the USCF landfill at Crossville, given that the library has apparently been consigned there. Whither, then, our Channing? There are the empty bungalows in Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's Chess City. One might not see another human being for months on end. Hence the prospect of introspect reminiscent of 40 days in the desert. Joel Channing: l'envoi. Personally, Larry, I read his resignation statement not as much as to future liability over the blessed forum which is so dear to Bill's heart, but in terms of its phrasing, how dear it will actually prove to have been already, come a counter-suit. That number will put any insurance amount in more shade than even the dusty Elista could [you see the trouble with following someone else's meataphor, and I blame you for starting this one!] - so could... cover in a sand storm? For those who wait for the denouement, they must know it will be more tick tick tick on their gold sand-proof Rolexes which are a fat lot of use on the shores of Tennessee, before the fat politicians sing. [admitted, horribly confounded metaphor of my own, but as you say, these are the days of grand-farce, the last days, Alas! or Hooray! for the hooray-Henrys?] Phil Innes > Joel Channing: l'envoi. > > Yours, Larry Parr > > > > > --- Sam Sloan <[email protected]> wrote: > > >>as follows: > > > The Historian wrote: >> On Apr 15, 7:58 am, samsloan <[email protected]> wrote: >> > Joel Channing finally carried out his often made threat or promise to >> > resign as follows: >> > >> > In a message dated 4/10/2008 6:37:28 A.M.
