biography :

Humpy Koneru (born 31 ch 1987 in Gudivada, Andhra Pradesh) is a
chess grandmaster from India. Her October 2007 FIDE Elo rating is
2606, placing her at number two in the world for women (behind Judit
Polgar), breaking the record of 2577 set by Susan Polgar for the
second-highest ranked female player in Chess history and becoming the
the second female player ever, after Judit Polgar, to cross the 2600
points .[1][2]

Humpy was originally named Hampi by her parents but her father later
changed it to Humpy, a more Russian-sounding name. She writes her
family name (Koneru) before her given name.

Humpy holds the record for the youngest woman ever to become a
grandmaster (not merely a Woman Grandmaster), which she achieved in 15
years, 1 month, 27 days, beating Judit Polgar's previous record by 3
months.[3]

In 2001 she won the World Junior Girls Chess Championship. In 2006 she
participated in the Women's World Chess Championship, but was
eliminated in the second round.[4]

I think that Humpy was a poor choice for a name. I thought it was a
derogatory rek when I first heard it.

Yes, that note about how she got her name was a bit of a puzzle.

You'd think it would be "Gumpy" at least, by analogy with "Gamlet" and
"Geller".

Drive by postings are always a bad idea. I always lose control of the
car while typing.

My mistake.

Just like a drive by shooting, it was a drive by posting.

I know she is from India. Have followed her for a few years. However
in the text it was noted that her name was changed to sound more
Russian.

Maybe if you read before commenting?

Yes very good! Congratulations to her.

To my American ears, "Humpy" doesn't sound Russian at all. What makes
it sound Russian and was the intent to mimic other Russian players, a
salute to Russia, so to speak?

Excellent! She surely will get stronger.
