That reminds me of the question, "How many squares are there on a chess board - and it is more than 64?" Gah! Gah! Gah! Gah! Gah! Gah! Gah! The answer being 204 (64 + 49 + 36 + 25 + 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 =3D 204). The board itself is one big square, and there are two squares of 7x7 etc.

Fire!" and disrobe on a city bus while standing on his head in a bathtub full of women's shoes, after giving God odds of knight, smashing up all his furniture and urinating on his opponents while drunk at a blindfold simul, the strain of which drove him mad from chess fever.

I was hoping to improve my result over last year, although it was going to be tough. My three girls (one human, two canine) are relieved to not be chess widows and orphans this year, but worry about what outlet I can find for my obsessiveness now... > > Oh? There were not that many quick finds last year, IIRC. Using more pictures certainly slowed us down, for example. Larry Crawford

Perhaps it was getting hard to get sponsors to donate prizes. Also the administrative overhead may have been too big a burden. When Hanon started ChessCafe.com, it was more or less just a hobby, but now it's a business enterprise requiring full-time attention. Personally, as the main writer of the quiz, I always enjoyed composing the questions, but with more and more chess info getting onto the web now, it was getting harder and harder to come up with questions that couldn't be answered with a few minutes of online searching. For example, one of my regular themes was chess players'/writers'/ composers' pseudonyms. Then Anders Thulin compiled a cross-reference of names and pseudonyms from Gaige's "Chess Personalia." So much for that kind of question. > I used to enjoy that. I used to get about 5 right on > my first read-through and end up with about 7 in all. That's about what I got on the first quiz, which was written by Edward Winter.

I used to get about 5 right on my first read-through and end up with about 7 in all. I bet you its absence is something to do with a lack of prizes owing tp the dispute with USCF caused by their lack of money due to the ongoing legal cases involving Sam Sloan and others.
