Here is a quote about the great mathematician,
Edmund Landau, from:

http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Landau.html

or

"Landau was always interested in mathematical
puzzles and even before he received his
doctorate he had published two books on
mathematical problems in chess."

Does anybody know more about this?

Wlod

Here are a couple of publications that should have information about Edmund
Georg Hermann Landau and his books on mathematical problems in chess:

Deutsche Schachzeitung, 1938, page 73
Poggendorfs Biographisch-Literarisches Handworterbuch, volume IV, page 834

Don't know when he got his doctorate, but one fairly well-known
book is 'ber preisverteilung bei spielturnieren' published in 1914.

His collected works have been published -- might be easier to
try those for any other chess-related works.

But I've provided a link! :-) At the very beginning:

"Edmund Landau attended the French Lyce in Berlin,
graduating at the age of 16 which is two years
earlier than was normal. He then studied mathematics
at the University of Berlin. His doctoral work there
was supervised by Frobenius and Landau received his
doctorate in 1899 for a work on number theory."

Thank you, and everybody in this thread,
for the information.
