Definitely a case of 'round up the usual suspects'.
It is like he asked someone not, "What do you think are the 12 best
games of all time?", but "What do you think people will expect me to
have as the 12 best games of all time?"

Kasparov:

"For me that was different. Immediately when I went for that long
combination I realized something very special would come onto the
board. When I started to sacrifice all those pieces, the sort of
feeling of large inspiration came over me, something that Big Writers
sometimes experience when they are writing."

Bleuuurrgh!
I think it is okay as a game, about on a par with Bogo v Alekhine
1922, but vastly overpraised, like a Russian tourist on her first walk
at night along an Italian promenade.
I think Kasparov made a mistake - he overhyped this game, so that now
people think this must be his BEST game, and it is not. He played, I
reckon, at least a dozen games more brilliant.
Another game I think is hugely overpraised is Botvinnik v Capablanca,
AVRO 1938. Capablanca was sick and past his very best in 1938.
Botvinnik probably should have knocked him over more easily than he
did.

An odd thing about Bogo v Alekhine 1922, is that it may have been
Chernev's number 1, but it did not appear at all in Nunn, Burgess &
MacLean's 100 Greatest Games.

Interesting. Irving Chernev, who may have played through more chess
games than any man who ever lived, at least up until the advent of
computers, considered it the greatest game of all time. I know
Alekhine could have won more simply and straightforwardly than he did,
but I still find the game quite pleasing.

Miy gripe about Keene's selections, aside from the two "immortal"
games not belonging at all, is that they're mostly very hackneyed,
trite, over-used. It's clear he didn't bother to do much research, he
just recycled ready-made games that were already over-anthologized and
overly familiar, grabbing them off the shelf, so to speak, and shoved
in some superficial notes.
You and Soltis do agree to some extent. Of your top ten, his top 100
includes Portisch-Kavalek at #60, and Mason-Janowski at #100. BTW, the
score you gave for the latter game is from 1902, not 1901. Ironically,
Mason finished well below Janowski in both events, but still beat him
in each. Here's the 1901 game:

I'd be interested to know what faults you find in it. It's not a
game I've played through in much depth, so I don't have a strong
opinion, but it seemed impressive at first blush.

Almost all of the games from Soltis & Keene are games where "one
player plays, the other applauds". I simply do not find that type of
game interesting - some of them, like B-A Hastings 1922, are
excruciating to play through. Surely there should be an element of
struggle in a chess game.
Kasparov Topalov is another game that will soon drop out of peoples'
Top Tens. It is just a load of HOOEY!

GM Raymond Keene gives his top 12 in "The Twelve Best Games of
Chess" (MacMillan 1991). He gives them in chronological order:

1. Anderssen-Kieseritzky, offhand, London, 1851 ("The Immortal
Game")
2. Morphy-Paulsen, New York 1857
3. Zukertort-Blackburne, London 1883
4. Steinitz-Chigorin, W Ch match, 4th game, Havavna, 1892
5. Pillsbury-Lasker, St. Petersburg 1896
6. Bernstein-Capablanca, Moscow, 1914
7.Boglyubov-Alekhine, Hastings 1922
8. Saemisch-Nimzovitch, Copenhagen 1923 (the "Immortal Zugzwang
Game")
9. Botvinnik-Capablanca, AVRO 1938
10. Larsen-Spassky, USSR vs. Rest of World, Belgrade, 1970
11. Fischer-Spassky, W Ch match, 6th game, Reykjavik, 1972
12. Karpov-Kasparov, W Ch match, 24th game, Moscow, 1985

Soltis would strongly disagree with some of these; for example he
calls Saemisch-Nimzovitch one of the most overrated games of the
century (due mainly to Nimzovitch's own hyping of it). Of Keene's
seven choices from the 20th century, only three make it into Soltis'
book, and of those only one, Bogolyubov-Alekhine, is in the top 10.
Larsen-Spassky is #18, Botvinnik-Capbalanca is #21. The others don't
even make Soltis' top 100. I point this out not to say one is right
and the other wrong, just to show how sharply opinions can differ.
One game on which I definitely disagree with Keene is Anderssen-
Kieseritzky, which in my view is perhaps the most overrated game of
all time. It has several major tactical errors of which Keene seems
completely unaware; for example he praises 18.Bd6, when in fact it is
a serious blunder that should have lost the game.
On the other hand, I very much like the 6th 1972 Fischer-Spassky
game, which Keene includes but Soltis does not. In fact Soltis does
not include any Fischer-Spassky games from 1972, preferring instead
one from the 1992 match, which he puts at #70.

Personally, I don't have strong opinions on this. Here are the top

No; it is just my own choice - although I think I'll take out Portisch-
Kavalek and put in Karpov-Anderson, Milan 1975.

I really would like to see other peoples' choices. We might even
manage to make a rgcm Top 10.
