Subject: chessbase 9 upgrade?
i am a legal owner of chessbase 9.0

after starting chessbase 9.0, a window pops up asking me to upgrade online.

i click cancel each time.

finally, today, i decide to go along with the upgrade "v9 to v10" whatever
that means. i figure if chessbase wants me to upgrade, it's probably a good
idea to do so.

so, i proceed.

now, upon trying to start chessbase, i get that it's no longer a valid
program.

ideas?

I can't imagine CB9 asking to upgrade online. IIRC the only time ChessBase
9 gives such a popup window it's when your logged onto the Playchess
server. But that aside.

If the program doesn't run anymore, there's nothing left to reinstall. If
you insert the DVD and start the install, there's also a "repair" option.
You could try that first before unistalling and reinstalling.

For me every upgrade basically has gone okay. Each one solved some bugs
and introduced some. With version 10 (AFAIK the most recent) I lost the
possibility to open the "options" context menu in a board window (or
ctrl-alt-o). I wonder if it's a local problem or if more people experience
it.

Good luck anyhow.

Yes, options isn't accessable here in _any_ way in the boardwindow.

Thanks. One for the bug list.

One or two more:
It seems the option can't accessed in the game-list either (tools-options).
In my opinion it's also a bug that you can't choose another engine than
a CB-native as the default. You can UCI-engine for analysis, but not set
it up as default - weird.

did the dvd thing again and no "repair" option arose. however, it just
reinstalled without any hint it knew there was a previous installation.

the upshot is it works fine now. i shall ignore any more update prompts!

thanks again CeeBee
