Are there any free open-source chess programs available on UNIX machines
that are better than crafty?

Thanks. I downloaded fruit. It compiled fairly easily after I'd renamed
a function 'quad()' as one is used on Solaris with the same name. But
its a UCI engine, not xboard/winboard which I want. I believe its
possible to get an "adapter" to make a UCI engine behave as a winboard one.

Look for PolyGlot, it's from the same author.
