By "simplify the position", I assume you mean "trade pieces". This can be accomplished by setting, for example, the "My Queen" value to be slightly lower than the "Opponent Queen" value in the personality settings. This will cause the personality to trade pieces more often, but still only when it would otherwise be relatively equal to keep them on the board. Secondly, you could decrease the "Contempt for Draw" setting. This is a bit more subtle, but it will cause the personality (as best as it can based on its other settings) to be more accepting of a position that is likely to lead to a draw (which includes trading pieces). However, it might also tend to cause the personality to lock up the position or shoot for a quick 3-fold draw even when it has an advantage. jm

There are several pre-defined opponents that will provide a good challenge and play fully believable chess. In increasing strength, I would try these (ratings as displayed on my P4-3.0): Joey (1125) Kris (1145) Josh - Age 6 (1200) Griffin (1282) Lacey "The Dreaded" (1308) iah (1320) Josh - Age 7 (1365) Sunny (1444) Trent (1463) Charles (1472) Ginger (1506) All of the others in that range have quirks that will either make them defeat themselves if you are patient enough, or are relatively easy to exploit once you know what they are. Enjoy! jm

Not too many moves seem unusual. When playing a computer dumb enough for me to beat doesn't have the same feel. Some moves seem too strong while some moves seem too dumb. Most of the players that play at my level choose to simplify the position. This doesn't seem to happen when playing computers. I can't really define it but playing computer chess is either too easy or too hard. Is there a setting that causes the computer to simplify the position? Then again, not too simple.

As a beginning guideline, Terry, you might be interested in a personality I made. It's identical to the Chessmaster 9000 personality but Maximum Search Depth is set to 9. (Selective Search is 9.) It averages 15 seconds per move. I played it against other CM9k personalities, and it seems to play at about 2600. In other words, it lost to the other grandmasters but beat everybody below the grandmaster level. Every game I have beat so far the Chessmaster said it was good for me taking advantage of a blunder. I really would like to be able to play against a pretty weak opponent, but not one stupid enough to leave pieces that can be taken without being defended once. http://i12.tinypic.com/2zyh65l.jpg I can beat this player but I am not sure what settings I should increase. I am not really sure what selective search does. I also have no clue if increasing the transposition Table makes the game harder or just gives it more performance. It plays plenty fast now.
