Subject: Pocket Fritz - anyone expanded tactics training?

Pocket Fritz 2 has a tactics training mode, but the problems are all mates and many are in one move - hardly very stretching. Has anyone tried adding their own tactics file? I've not checked the format (it might be text, or might be binary), but if anyone knows how to do it, let me know. Still no word from Chessbase about when (more like IF) they will ever fix the problem that is is no longer possible to use the online database properly. My gripe over this issue can be read in my finger notes on ICC http://www.chessclub.com/cgi-bin/finger/finger.pl?handle=g8wrb -- Dave (from the UK) Please note my email address changes periodically to avoid spam. It is always of the form: [email protected] Hitting reply will work for a few months only - later set it manually. http://witm.sourceforge.net/ (Web based Mathematica front end)

You can use any PGN file for tactics training. I do it all the time. However, it requires a bit of a workaround that is not explained in the PocketFritz manual. I'm describing this from memory, but I found the method someplace on the web, so if you want to be sure, I recommend you search the web (probably Chessbase's T-Notes by Steve Lopez would describe this in more detail). The default file that PocketFritz uses for tactics training is named "Tactics.pgn". You need find the folder where this file resides. I renamed it to "PFTactics.pgn" so that I wouldn't lose it. Then copy your file, which you have also named "Tactics.pgn" to this directory. You will also find in this directory a couple of other files like "Tactics.pgi" and "Tactics.pgr" (I think). These files need to be deleted (they will be recreated by PocketFritz, but if they are already there, PocketFritz gets confused if you have changed the file you are using as "Tactics.pgn"). Now start up PocketFritz and choose "Tactics Training" and the position will be the first one from your PGN file. Good luck and happy tactics training! It should also work to rename these files consistently with the original PGN file. (So, in your case, PFTactics.pg*.) I've not tried this, mind, as I don't have Pocket Fritz.
