Been quite a while since I felt the desire to play online. I noticed that http://www.freechess.org/ times out. Is FICS temporarily down or completely gone? M.

The webserver has been down for a depressingly long time (about two months now, IIRC) but the chess server is still up and running. You can connect to FICS by downloading an interface, such as BabasChess (http://www.babaschess.net/). I still wonder about the FICS future if they are having such fundamental issues [most likely related to funding]. -- Thomas T. If it was me, I'd have set up a small webserver on the game server that just displayed a message saying, ``The web server is down but you can still connect using an interface'' and then maybe links to the most popular interfaces. That would have stopped lots of people believing that FICS was dead, at least. There are probably plenty of people who would host it, too -- or host even the "real" site, if it's a matter of insufficient funds. The trouble is also that you can't register a new account. Yes, you can play as a guest, but that's not quite the same. Anyway, I remembered that I got a year of free access to playchess.com/schach.de with Fritz 10, so I spent some time there today (watched the Kramnik/Fritz game ... still having trouble to believe he didn't see the mate-in-one!). I sort of prefer BabaChess, though. M.
