Is it possible to play on ICC (or FICS) using a Windows Mobile PDA? What
software would one use?

Thanks,

Angelo

Yes, Intelli Chess

http://www.intellichess.com/

allows one to use ICC but not FICS. *BUT* the program is a horrible
chess program. Specificaly:

1) You can only play non-rated games.
2) No seek graph.
3) No way to seek a game within a certain rating range - essentialy you
have no idea who your opponent might be.
4) Pieces look rather poor.
5) Although you can save games as PGN, it looks to me like you can only
read the ..ICG formatt (whatever that is - perhaps its ICC specific).
6) It's very hard to see what piece has been moved. The square a piece
from and to has a very narrow red border, but it is hard to see.

As much as I'd like to play on ICC using my PDA, I've yet to find a
decent method.

The web site for Intelli Chess looks quite impressive - I'm afraid to
say IMHO the program is nowhere near as impressive.

Let' us hope either Pocket Grandmaster or Pocket Fritz start to support
ICC. I suspect whoever does that first will win all the reviews for
chess programs. They are both pretty good and not a lot between them
(although my preference is for Pocket Grandmaster).

I'll check out Thinkerboard someone else mentioned. I've never come
across that one myself.

I just downloaded ThinkerBoard which allows play on ICC and other chess
servers with a Pocket PC and are quite impressed.

The web page describing it:

http://www.geocities.com/thechessthinker/index.html

looks *very* bland, but the actual program is not bad at all. The web
page does not do it justice.

I'm not saying ThinkerBoard is a great program (its not as polished as
Pocket Fritz or Pocket Grandmaster). But ThinkerBoard and IntelliChess
are the only two I know of for the Pocket PC that allow online play and
it is certainly the better of the two. ThinkerBoard has the advantage of
being free too!!

Compare than to Intelli Chess, where the web page looks nice, but the
program is horrible.

Thinks I like about ThinkerBoard are:

1) It is free, although it does not appear to be open-source.

2) It is the only usable chess program for a PDA that allows one to play
on ICC. (I don't consider IntelliChess to be usable).

3) You can play any sort of game on ICC - rated, unrated, wild or
whatever you like.

4) You can type in any server you want, so you can use ICC, FICS or
anything else for that matter.

5) You have a command window so can send arbitrary commands. You are not
restricted to a small subset of ICC commands.

6) There are Several chess engines if you want to play with them -
(Thinker, Amy and Crafty).

7) I *think* you can run the chess engines on the chess server. So you
could have Crafty running on a PDA for example.

Things I don't like:

1) Like IntelliChess it is not easy to see what piece has moved,
although its a bit easier than with IntelliChess. But nothing like as
easy as on Pocket Fritz or Pocket Grandmaster.

2) It is not very polished. The version number is 0.1.0020

3) No support for PGN files.

It is certainly not great, but it is usable.

Look for Thinkerboard. It works, but there is no sound after a move
played by your opponent, so it is difficult to use a real wooden board
with it (you have to check the PDA screen).
