AFAIK, its ELO rating is somewhere between 1600-1700, much
lesser than Crafty which is around 2650.

Speaking of strength, one engine which really does vary its
strength nicely is Sjeng.

http://sjeng.org/indexold.html

Commercial one (Deep Sjeng stands at 2750 ELO)

Nearly all engines which I play with usually operate in full
strength mode ignoring the value for strength setting. Also
making them change their opening is a PITA.

Winning at times, even in moderate strength is cool, no? :)

It's hard to say. Usually, the only way that computers play enough
games to get a rating is to play them against each other. But then
the resulting rating only lets you compare the strength of one
computer vs another.

It's also hard to say because GNU Chess isn't on the SSDF rating list.
It has a reputation for not being especially strong, as far as
computers go.

On the UNIX version of xboard you can play one engine vs another.
Crafty always beats GNU chess.
