Subject: Fritz freezes up when I'm winning!!!
I've had this problem with both Fritz8 & Fritz9. I play into a late
middlegame position and, especially when I'm one or two pawns up, Fritz
freezes. The clock stops and Fritz stops calculating. I can hit move
now and Fritz begins analyzing again. However, after 4 or 5 moves, it
may freeze up again. It doesn't appear to matter which engine I'm
using. It usually only happens when I have a favorable positon. I
updated Fritz 9 a few months ago. Cebee, any remedies for this?? It is
very annoying. This is the only occasion when my relatively new Dell
freezes up. I contacted Mig, or whoever answers Chessbase questions at
ChessCafe, about the problem and, of course, never got an answer.

"Whoever" would be me. There was a problem with the e-mail redirect
for one of the three(!) separate support links, but that's been
sorted.

Wouldn't have mattered anyway -- I've not seen this behavior myself or
heard of anyone else having the problem, so any answer I'd give would
be a guess. In light of that, my *guess* is that one of your tablebase
(*.emd) files might be corrupted. Recopy them to your hard drive and
see if the behavior continues; if so, you can write directly to
ChessBase GmbH at [email protected]

Check if your tablebases are the culprit - if you use them. If one or more
tables are corrupt, ift might give rise to these glitches, especially
because it both happens on F8 and F9, updates or not. In late middle games
TB positions might be reached in analysis already.

Disable or transfer tablebases and see if it solves your problem. If not
deinstalling and reinstalling might be what's left.

Another option to solve the problem is to lose all the time.

I've had that happen occasionally but only when I switch between the
`Notation', `Scoresheet' and `Opening book' panes (and not depending
on how well I thought I was doing). Is that what's happening to you?

I not only have this problem with Fritz, I have it with ChessBase as well.
Welcome to the club.

How do you get a favorable position against Fritz 8 or 9? Anatoly, you
should stop posting anonymously.

Mig only answers questions about his friends, like Kasparov. You must be
talking about Steve Lopez. Steve knows everything about CB products, but I
don't believe he does tech support for them any longer.

As for the rest of the crew at CB GmbH, forget it. I have emailed them about
two dozen times. The only time they answered with anything helpful was once
when I asked about a product I was thinking of purchasing. CB has long ago
adopted the Dell Computer model of customer service.
