Subject: Disappointed with Rybka 2.2
I have recently purchased the MP version of Rybka 2.2. Although I am
only a 1500-1600 player, I managed to get a draw against the program. I
have always been beaten soundly by the Chessbase engines (Fritz,
Shredder, Junior etc.) on their 'top' level. Rybka didn't seem to
recognize a 3-repetition position, so I managed a draw.
Do you think that is a bug??
My system specs are AMD 64 X2 4800+ with 2GB RAM.
I know that I aren't s'pose to post pgn files here, but if it is any
help here is the game...

Call it instinct or just experience, but I can hardly believe Rybka 2.2
would play this line out of opening book. Did you have an opening book
loaded?

2...Nf6--very unusual; c6, e6 or dxc4 are vastly more common.
3...c6--not unheard of, but hard to figure why this particular choice
among several others.
7...Bd7--maybe Rybka was already out of book here; again, Bd6, Bb4+,
Bc5 all more common moves, not to mention more logical

This isn't absolutely convincing evidence but it is suggestive...

It is a little odd that Rybka would choose such an opening but, while
it's not great, it's not a completely terrible opening. And even
without an opening book, I'd expect it to slaughter a 1500-1600 player
and dance on his grave. :-)

Thanks Dave. I agree that Rybka should have slaughtered me. Dancing on my
grave, I do not agree with! :-)
Of course, I used the Rybka opening book supplied with the engine
(designed by Jeroen Noomen, I believe). The opening used by Rybka was
definitely not the best (but that is an opinion of a 1500 player!).
Maybe I should give it another chance with me playing white, although I am
concerned it might make a fool of me, like it did when I played black!
The issue I have is that I have NEVER been given a chance against the
Chessbase engines, so I was expecting a 'walk-over' by the Rybka engine.

Something is screwy, or maybe the programmer forgot the 3-fold repitition
rule. Wouldn't be the first time.

My gripe against Rybka 2.2 is the interface is quite foreign for CB users.
Convekta made no attempt to make their interface intuitive.

Also, I did not receive any documentation so the only things I can do are
those I figure out from the unintuitive menus. I have no idea how the
program is set up, how the books, databases, and engines work or fit
together, or what its capabilities are.

I've gone online and emailed Convekta's customer support to no avail.

If anyone can help here I'd appreciate it.

Angelo

Probably not.

What settings were you using for Rybka?

There's nothing wrong with posting PGN here!

I was using the default settings (just as I bought it). I assumed that
like Chessbase engines, the default settings would be the strongest
settings. I would have to go into the game to get more detailed info.

In the first match game Kramnik vs DeepFritz
Kramnik played 30 a4 and got a drawish position.

Rybka 2.2 plays 30 e3! immediately -
and white's evaluation is going up.

That was Kramnik's winning chance,
says Rybka 2.2 ... and GM Seirawan, too.

Rybka 2.2 is very very strong!
