Subject: CB9 question - re: "source" field

I have many games in my database which contain a "source" field which I
want to blank out.
Question: how do I get rid of (i.e. blank them out) the "Publication"
and "Date" fields? It's no problem for the "Title" and "Publisher"
fields - but the dates remain even with blank title/publisher fields.
Any suggestions?

Whatever you do, before making global or extensive changes BACK UP the
database. CB9 is an extremely unstable program that does all sorts of
mischief. It's not like Word or some other off-the-shelf program where you
can undo changes. I lost my entire personal OTB games database because I
tried to merge it with my server games.

I just tried some tests on another database in which all fields in
"Source" are blank. If I put in a dummy source text, the default dates
appear, and they stay even after I blank out the dummy source text.
Curiously enough, when I convert the above database to PGN (with the
dummy source text filled in), I get [Source "test"] which is what I
placed in the "publisher" field (not the "title" field), and I get
[Source Date] with the "publication" date. Those are the only two
"source" lines I get when I saved it as PGN via CB9.

The only outstanding problem now is that I have 468,676 games with a
blank source and publisher - but with a "publication" of 27.07.2005 and
a "date" of 01.01.2006. Is there any simple way of blanking out these
fields, or setting them to a date which is equivalent of a blank? I
tried F2 with this group of games to no avail.

Both dates should be automatically reset to 01.01.2006 if the "source" and
"publisher" fields are blanked out. As I explained already you can't "blank
out" any of the date fields; these are no empty fields you can fill up with
any string - they're predefined date fields.
Possibly both "source" and "publisher" fields aren't really empty, maybe a
space left. In the tricks division you could try to fill them both up with
random text, save it, then delete both again and see if that helps. You
never know.

That is no problem if I want to edit one game at a time. My problem is
that I have thousands of games to edit, and selecting the source(s) I
want to edit (via F2) won't get rid of the offending "Publication" and
"Date" fields.
I could convert the selected games to PGN, set up a script to remove
the "Source" (and other) fields, and re-import them, but that is time
consuming.

You don't edit one game at a time, you edit one source at a time. Open a
database, go to the tab "sources", and select the source you want to
"remove". Right click on it and choose "edit" (or k the source and hit
F2).
Now simply remove the title and publisher (empty the fields), close the
dialog box and it's gone. You won't see anything in the "publication",
"date" etc. field anymore. The games are joined with the games without a
source, indicated by a blank line in your sources list.
If you want to "unsource" some games from a source, and some not, then
indeed there's nothing left but to edit each game at a time.

Delete the publisher and title and you won't see it pop up as a separate
source anymore. You can check that by selecting the "source" tab of your
database. There you also can edtit (with F2) each line and see the result
