I find it difficult to complete games in time. So a bit of strength was decreased to improve game speed. I would like to know is the playing strength ok or you want a much stronger opponent? Play a game and tell me http://www.GetClub.com/Chess.html If I increase its stregth then it will think longer. Please let me know your opinion. What should be improved further. The Time taken by move or the Play Strength? Bye Sanny Play Chess at: http://www.GetClub.com/Chess.html

GetClub master level vs. help bot: 1.d4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bf4 Bf5 5.Nh4 Bc8 6.Nf3 Bg4 7.Ne5 Bf5 (Ahhhh, home at last!) 8.h4 e6 9.e3 h6 10.g4 Bh7 11.Be2 Bb4 12.O-O Bxc3 13.bxc3 Ne4 > 14.Nf3? (An awful move.) >> 14. Nf3 was played to save h4 Pawn. As Queen could take h4 pawn and >> attack White's King. Either way now way to save a pawn. Ah, but that was not the *priy* threat. The main threat was ...Nxc3, snatching a pawn and forking the Queen and Bishop; Tally one point for the pawn, and then add a bit more for winning the minor exchange (Bishop for Knight). Of all the men on the chessboard, the least valuable of them all is the lowly Rook-pawn. Consider that if Black grabs this pawn (I would!) and later castles on the king-side (I would), the open file can be used for an attack (which would likely fail, because of my amazing defensive skills). White simply plays K-g2 and then R-h1, and he owns the h-file. This is very similar to where, later in this game, White played R/a-b1, applying pressure to Black's (extra) pawn at b7. Every time a pawn is hung like that, there is a tiny bit of compensation in the form of a half-opened file for the Rooks. Ignoring the priy threat while tending to a secondary one is evidence of a lack of "understanding" of chess fundamentals. Let's suppose, for simplicity's sake, that your program likes to do integer math, for some reason or other. A pawn might be counted as 10 points, a Knight as 30, and a Queen as 900+. So then a Rook-pawn should be discounted a bit (except if it is certain to promote, in which case it is just as good as its brothers). The fact (whine all you want, Knight lovers), I said FACT that Bishops are a bit superior to Knights can be reflected in this system by going up to, say, somewhere between 31 and 33 -- but not too high, because then exchanges involving the Queen vs. minor pieces will be thrown all out of whack. Another item to consider is that Black has given up one of his Bishops in order to inflict damage on White's infrastructure. This leaves White with the Bishop pair, which can be very handy indeed. Here, Black may come to dominate the light squares, but White has the upper-hand on the dark squares, and it's just good business to keep one's best men on the payroll; I am talking about White's light-squared Bishop, of course. It's not for nothing that in piece- odds games, it is the Queen's Knight which is removed from the board; while all pieces might be equal in God's eyes, that one is a little less equal than others, and this applies in reverse to the KB, which is just a little "more equal" than her brethren. Another mistake to avoid is simplification. This is a bad idea when one has just lost a pawn, and the more so when playing computer vs. human, for humans are less likely to err in simpler positions than in complex ones. Thus, I prefer 14.Qe1 to avoid any trades, but also reasonable was 14.c4 or 14.Bd3. A Rook-pawn is not likely going to decide the outcome; piece play probably will. -- help bot

(Fritz says I should avoid discussing the part where I took seven hours and fourteen moves to finally get up the courage to play ...g5!, but then, I never listen.): GetClub master level - help bot --------------------------------------------- This game took many, many hours, as the chess program was not only deathly slow, but there were random disconnects requiring a dozen or so re- starts. 1.d4 (I wanted to take the program out of book as early as possible, so...) 1. ...c6. 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nc3 (Blocking the QB-pawn like this can lead to a slight cramp, and White may have to compensate later by extraordinary measures such as p- f3, for instance.) ...Nf6 4.Bf4 Bf5 5.Nh4 Bc8 (This sort of thing prevents Black from smoothly developing the QB to f5 -- unless he just wants a draw by repetition.) 6.Nf3 Bg4 7.Ne5 Bf5 8.h4 (This may look silly, but it requires an accurate response.) ...e6 9.e3 h6 (Not quite good enough. Black might perhaps improve by playing ...Nbd7 at move 8.) 10.g4! Bh7 (Now White should follow through with 11.g5! hg 12.hg Bxc2 13.Qxc2 Rxh1 14.gxf6 gxf6, when White is better because his two pieces are somewhat superior to the Rook and two pawns, one of which is doubled. I should have looked at this possibility more carefully.) 11.Be2 Bb4 12.O-O? (Ignoring the threat.) ...Bxc3 13.bxc3 Ne4 14.Nf3? (An awful move.) ...Nxc3 15.Qe1 Nxe2+ 16.Qxe2 O-O 17.R/ a-b1 b6 18.Kh1? (Another simply awful move.) ...Be4! 19.g5 hg 20.Bxg5 f6 21.Bf4 e5 (White cannot hereafter open the f-file due to the pin on his Knight.) 22.Bg3 Qe8 23.Kg2 Qh5 (The game is, for all intents and purposes, already over here, barring any horrible blunders by Black.) 24.a4 Nd7 25.Rg1 R/a-e8 26.Rb3 Re6 27.Qd1 Rf7 28.c3 Nf8 29.Qe2 g5 (It's about time! This could have been played at any time, but I wanted more than just g5-g4, netting the pinned Knight, where in some lines the White King might just wander off; that's like going squirrel hunting, and I'm after BIG game!) 30.Bh2 Qxh4 31.Bg3 Qg4 32.Qd1 Rh7 33.Kf1 Bxf3 34.Qd3 Be4 35.Qd2 (Not the best square.) ...Qh3+ 36.Ke1 (I was thinking about sac'ing my Queen here for a textbook back-rank mate, when it suddenly hit me that my Bishop needed to be on f3 for this to actually work!) ...Bf3 37.Rb1 (The escape square, d2, needed to be vacated immediately.) ...Qg2 38.Rf1 Qxf1+ 39.Kxf1 (...Rh1++) 0-1 Note that on the GetClub Web site, the stronger the level, the lower its rating! The master level is around 500-600, though any rational assessment would allow that it is stronger than all the quicker-moving levels which have higher ratings. Since in this game (and many others) it fails to spot a checkmate coming two moves away, there is clearly a serious problem with tactics. The program also chops off the final move of a game by a pre-emptive resignation at any mate-on-the-move detection. -- invincible bot

There are NO programs "more demanding ... than Sanny's". Today I was trying to play at GetClub against the Beginner level, and my doggone anti-virus software started cranking the hard drive non-stop. It is not enough for it to check every file on my computer for viruses, oh no! It had to also update itself via the internet and somehow I lost connection over and over, in spite of the program's lightning-fast move times. Of all the programs I have run, the GetClub chess program seems to crank the fan more than any other, probably because it is just "thinking" in circles... . -- help bot

Well, it happened before the program called Rybka became the new standard for chess programs, or at least the latest versions of Rybka. Now that IM Innes has Rybka, I don't think even Bobby Fischer would want to risk playing him. Of course, he probably had some other chess program, but if you check the games you can easily tell. For instance, in my games there are perhaps a thousand places where I erred and even a mediocre computer would have found the correct tactical shot. In reading CL magazine I am noticing that nearly all the annotators are focusing on their programs' thinking, asking question like "why not 1.N-e4?", to which the (greatly annoyed) GMs reply with utter nonsense, since they just overlooked some tactical finesse that Fritz saw easily. Generally speaking, IM Innes did not really compete at GetClub; it is more like he just went there a few times to see if the latest "improvements" made any difference. I think it is possible that one-fifth of the listed "best" players in the scrollbar represent his various identities. -- help bot

Could you do complete analysis of the game played between you and Master Level which you won. Here is recorded Game http://www.getclub.com/playgame.php?id=DM8257&game=Chess Please let me know which were the wrong moves which it should not have played and what was the better move. I will tell to remove the wrong moves. Bye Sanny Play Chess at: http://www.GetClub.com/Chess.html

I played a game against one of the higher levels, and got disconnected more times than I can count. We finally finished a game, after I restarted a dozen or so times. The program played okay, but at the end it allowed a simple mate when it could have survived a bit longer (weeks, perhaps). > > be an end to our complaints about the program's strength > > of play. > > Not for long, Try playing with higher levels. True; it is very distracting to have to restart so many times, and I could lose the thread (or just fall asleep). > Today Beginner Level was able to Draw game with Zebediah who used to > beat even the Master Level. Zebediah is probably a fish. If beginner level beat him, he might be Rob Mitchell or IM Innes. Okay, maybe computers can be dangerous at times, but they can also be amazingly stupid, most of the time. Your program took half an hour, it seemed, on move two, after my bone-crusher, 1.d4 c6. It did find N-h4 after my ...B-f5, which was impressive (for such a stupid program). If you want to beat me, you are going to have to buy more silicon chips or something. -- invincible bot

The Program accepted them to play but you were unable to play. I find "Tayllor Kingston" username is not in use. So you need to signup again with username"Tayllor Kingston" again. You can take other username also. You may update your username and other Settings on this page. http://www.getclub.com/Update/Updateit.php?lang=en&upd=username And once your username is proper you can play without any problem. If you could give your username I could check and see why the program is not accepting your login while It allowed other 10 players. Bye Sanny Play Chess at: http://www.getclub.com/Chess.html

My point about > Sanny's silly question still stands. Conclusion: TK is one of those ignorant newbies, who have no clue what the symbol ; >D means. (It's hard to imagine someone rated 2300+ who is so utterly clueless, but there are the facts, and what else can be made of them?) For the record, it is called a "smiley", and the use of a semicolon instead of the standard colon for the eyes, indicates a wink. ------ IMO, it is quite likely that the real reason TK has gotten a bit hot under the collar here is that he did in fact place a protective put on his 50 - 0 record by switching identities on GetClub. The joke is we all know that, just like others (including me), he did not earn this perfect record without a bit of "negotiation skill". The archives tell the tale better than I can after so much time has elapsed, but in essence, Sanny's Web site is so buggy that even a Bobby Fischer would have great difficulty in earning a perfect-looking record there without some off the board skills in persuasion and persistence. -- help bot

Yesterday Zebediah Ranked Third at GetClub Chess was able to finish a game with Master Level. I knew that in the past, there were many times when the same action would render identical problems, and that on occasion the problem would go away for reasons I could not explain. Excuse me, but it was definitely not luck! Luck tends to run out just when you need it most. And what is more, there is no need to always find the best move in order to beat a GM -- they're nowhere near THAT good. > This probably makes you, if not a GM, a very lucky choice-maker. > The point is obvious: if Sanny's program makes 'good moves', as Sanny > himself often told us,,, GM's moves even, that doesn't make it a GM-level > program. 1 stupid move making it lose to a human with level 1200 makes it a > level <1200 engine (even if it makes 95% Rybka moves) Now you are confusing Sanny's program with IM Innes. Sanny's program, as far as I can see, is now making inferior moves which do not instantly hang material, and this is miles away from what Rybka does. In fact, the Rybka program often will like a move which other, more materialistic programs reject, and Rybka will even dismiss an extra pawn as almost irrelevant when there is decent compensation by human terms. I can't seem to finish even one game anymore, so I can't give a decent estimate of the program's strength, except in the early opening phase. For that, the ability to not hang anything outright surely places the rating above 1500 or so. -- help bot

That would be cheating, would it not? Yes, but in this example it is not the computer that is doing the cheating, but the programmer who forced it to do that against its will. As already explained in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", when you do things like that, you cannot blame the computer. Look to humans for the real culprit; root out the human cheaters, and there will be no cheating. -- help bot

Now the only thing is whether you need more strength or the strength at which the game is playing is OK. Play a few games and let me know how it is playing. http://www.getclub.com/Chess.html Yesterdays 3 Games I saw the Beginner Level making moves in 10-20 seconds. and Easy Level in 20-30 sec / move. The game has become too good to be told, Just Play and you will find what I am saying. You can finish a game with Beginner Level in 25 min Beginner: 1600 You can finish a game with Easy Level in 1.5 hour Easy: 1700 You can finish a game with Normal Level in 4 hours Normal: 1800 You can finish a game with Master Level in 8 hours Master: 1900 Bye Sanny Play Chess at: http://www.getclub.com/Chess.html

Not true at all; I could not hope to detail all the times that I have performed the same action on my computer, only to get very different results. For instance, starting my internet program may well lead to an error identical to what happens when they claim I have not paid my bill on time, but wait ten minutes and try again and presto, no error and I am on! With regard to Sanny's Web site, there are a multitude of things one can try without success, but on occasion finally get through somehow (I can't even begin to explain it) to play a game of chess. The same thing applies elsewhere; I tried to inflate the tires on my botcycle with a gadget that plugs into the cigarette lighter on my car, and though it made noise it pumped no air. Later, I tried again and this time it started working; I cannot explain how it could make such noise and yet pump no air, but that is quite beside the point. > Sanny's program cheats. Sanny's program always cheats. Baloney. A computer cannot "cheat"; it only does what its programmer tells it to do. In this case, the programmers are incompetent and cannot seem to even get it to play random moves on cue. You have just confused cheating, which is a type of deception really, with utter incompetence. > The only effective punishment for cheating is "shunning". Shunning is not severe enough to get real results; this is why burning at the stake was invented, my brother. Another great invention of us religious folk is drowning in the river, to see if a person floats or not; witches, you see, float, because they are made of wood. If the test fails, you have an innocent corpse to bury but this is a very small price to pay for identifying the witches among us. No, I think although it is true that Sanny is quite incapable of learning, this is no reason to give up all hope; for instance, an earthquake could destroy his servers, or a virus erase his hard drives; His mother could come along at any time and take away his surfing privileges; or his dad could show up and make him apologize for all the lying he's been doing here. They might even put him in "time out" or make him do homework. Life is rough. -- help bot

But did you expect it? Playing chess against a GM for instance could make you a winner, if you choose the best answer against him all the time, even if it's by sheer luck. This probably makes you, if not a GM, a very lucky choice-maker. The point is obvious: if Sanny's program makes 'good moves', as Sanny himself often told us,,, GM's moves even, that doesn't make it a GM-level program. 1 stupid move making it lose to a human with level 1200 makes it a level <1200 engine (even if it makes 95% Rybka moves)

Well, since these program problems seem to never be solved, I would suggest you allow the user to select the ACTUAL time (not claimed), as determined by polling the user's computer's built-in clock and not some distant galaxy time continuum, and let the strength fall where it may. For instance, if the user selects ten seconds per move and then complains that the program hangs pieces left and right, shift the blame and tell him that the weakness was caused by him not giving the program enough (i.e. infinite) time to find better moves. If the user selects an hour per move, have the program move in an hour -- not ten hours -- per move, and if there are still complaints about poor moves, so be it. At least this way, the never-ending complaints about "cheating" or over-stepping the stated time per move will have been resolved, once and for all. When I say "polling" the user's computer's own clock, I mean simply having your Java applet check the user's machine to see what it (or his Windows OS, perhaps) says is the local time. Certainly, if someone wanted to cheat he could perhaps alter the clock during play, but right now I don't think anybody *needs* to cheat in order to win, so this should not really be an issue. -- help bot
