my opponents King is on b8, my Queen is holding the King there on d7 and I'm getting ready to promote a pawn g7 to g8. when i promote the pawn is the resulting position checkmate (i'm thinking yes) since the K wasnt in check before the move and now is, or is it a stalemate? I realize this should be an easy question but i somethimes get them confused. thanks in advance.

It's checkmate. Your move isn't complete until you've placed the new queen on the board at g8. That queen gives check so, unless your opponent can capture on g8 or place a piece between f8 and c8, it's checkmate. In other words, if you imagine you already had a queen on g7 and moving that queen to g8 would be checkmate, then promoting a pawn to a queen on g8 is also mate. From the position you've described, it's probably checkmate on promotion, unless you have something that can move to a square between c8 and f8 to interpose. I'm also assuming you're looking at promoting to a queen or a rook (as you can also promote to a bishop or a knight if you want) Stephan -- Stephan Bird MChem(Hons) AMRSC Currently in Caernarfon, Wales
