I played my first rated games there in the early 1970s, in club tournaments directed by the late Elliot Dobbins, a wonderful gentleman. I left San Diego in 1980, but went back to visit the club around 1995. Some of the 1970s regulars were still there. The club of course is in a wonderful setting. There are few places on earth more beautiful than Balboa Park. I heartily second Geof's recommendation.

Mr. Chartier: It has been a long time since I played chess in San Diego, but my understanding is that the best place to play casual chess is still the San Diego Chess Club in Balboa Park. They are open daily for casual play. The club has a web site at : http://groups.msn.com/SanDiegoChess Some of the more useful information (address, hours, etc.) on this site is at: http://groups.msn.com/SanDiegoChess/yourwebpage1.msnw This club requires a membership fee to play, and I don't know what the rules are for visitors. However, I suspect at the worst they would charge you a modest daily fee to play. I would suggest that, once you arrive in San Diego, you telephone the Club at (619) 239-7166 after 3 p.m. and inquire about the rules for visitors and a good time to seek blitz games. - Geof Strayer
