Subject: Why are super GMs scared of the Zaitsev Variation?

I have noticed that when Anand and Kramnik try to play the Zaitsev variation with Bb7 against Leko, he does not want to play the mainline with d4. Instead he wimps out with playing d3. What is the deal? Is the Zaitsev really that powerful of an opening for black? I thought Kasparov had already demonstrated methods to tame this opening during the Kasparov-Karpov contests of the 80s. thanks, Ivan
