How to Play Shogi or Japanese chess video on the Internet I have created a video about How to Play Shogi for my TV show, which will be broadcast on Monday September 26, 2005 at 3:30 PM New York time, which is today. Internet viewers can see the show at that time by going to http://www.bcat.tv/bcat and clicking on Channel 1. I think this is the best video ever made in English on shogi. I hope that all chess players will watch it, because shogi is in many ways the ideal game. It can be played at a high level without the memorization of opening variations. What is needed is the talent to calculate long combinations and variations, much longer than in standard chess. One advantage I have found is that Japanese conclude that because I am a good shogi player, I have a deep knowledge of Japanese culture. Actually, I know nothing about Japanese culture, or if they have one. All I know is how the little thingies move. I have made one more shogi video which I will broadcast at a later date. I have enough recorded material for one additional show, depending on audience reception. Sam Sloan

No. Unfortunately, I was not able to capture the streaming video in my computer. Others have been able to do it, but I have not yet mastered the technique. I am told that there is a way to play the tape directly from the PDX10 Camcorder I use into the computer and save it in MP3 format. I hope to be able to learn how to do that. Sam Sloan
