Subject: Sam Sloan's Games from the 2007 World Open
|
Here are my games from the World Open. This includes a game I played as a filler in the Under-2200 section. As will be observed, in most of the games I was lost, but still I managed to score 6 1/2 - 3 1/2. Had I won my last round game I would have won $500. Before leaping to any sweeping conclusions here, we would need to know Sam Sloan's *overall* ratio of wins to losses, not just the results from this one tourney. I replayed the three wins he had as Black, and although he displayed some chess skill, there was more than a bit of luck involved in how things turned out. Indeed, it looked like his opponents were taken away from their usual strengths and plunged into deep tactical waters, where they quite simply drowned. Maybe the reverse would hold true: if SS were to attempt any solid, sound openings, he might come up wanting for lack of technique or positional understanding of real chess. -- help bot

Sam Sloan is not his legal name. Any USCF rated tournament must include the legal name of the entrant. As such, SLoans games are illegal and all matches are forefit.

But I suppose these might have been won before hand, but I am guessing not because of the name. And this is pretty darn stupid. I believe the rule is that it is that the member is the same person as the participant. But rant on. Sheesh.

So getting back on topic (and removing the politics and computer chess groups from the distribution) ... I found this interesting. Sam scored 4 wins and a draw as black. As white, he played the Grob every time (1. g4) and got 2 wins and 3 losses. How many players do you know who score significantly worse as white than they do as black? I'd almost be willing to bet money that Sam's rating would be 200 points higher if he'd just give up the Grob and play ANY opening that starts with 1. e4 or 1. d4. I'm not trying to say that the Grob, or any other theoretically unsound opening, doesn't have its uses. Those types of things can be fine if you're playing blitz or just messing around for fun. But in a major tourney like this with a slow time control, I'd be sticking to the openings where I've had the best success rate. --Richard

Except for a few professionals: isn't the whole idea of playing chess to have fun, to enjoy it? So, if somebody likes the types of games developing from specific openings, why shouldn't he play it? Whether he could get some rating points more with a different style - who cares? If somebody plays for his ELO and not for the game itself, I think, something is not quite right. And is indeed more success guaranteed with switch of openings? Sam has considerable experience with those kinds of openings (Grob's his not his only unsound opening), where his opponents usually don't. It's not only the moment of surprise on his side, it's also the unusual patterns emerging from those strange openings he knows better than others. Greetings, Ralf
