Subject: Sam Sloan's Best Games of Chess

Here are four of my best games of chess. The first is probably the
best game I ever played, with a fantastic queen sacrifice followed by
smothered mate at the end. My opponent was a woman chess player who
often changes her ried name. Her name at the time of this game was
Gina Wolski. She is also known as Gina Sanchez.
The second is a game I beat Grandmaster Walter Browne. It was
published in Chess Life Magazine in February 1968.
The third is a game I beat International Master George Makropoulos.
His FIDE rating is about 2450. These days he is more importantly
politically, as he is the Acting Executive Director of FIDE.
In the last game, I sacrificed my queen against an International
Master rated about 2450. At the time of the game he represented
Yugoslavia but now he lives in the USA.

These games are nothing special. Most players of Sloan's strength
score a few upsets over the years. In almost every case, as in these
games, the reason is that the stronger player makes a serious error,
rather than the lower player suddenly rising to a higher level.
Sloan's incessant need for shameless exhibitionism and pretentious
self-promotion is amazing. On this group and elsewhere he exposes his
sex life, ital disputes, family problems, and other personal things
any decent person would keep private. He pretends to be an expert on
every subject under the sun, and to have been an eye-witness to every
important event since Cain slew Abel, or at least to have had a close
relative involved. And he boasts about such ridiculous things as his
child's prowess at video games and his own "success" with members of
the oldest profession.
And let's not forget his tendency to spread rumors and falsehoods
without bothering first to check the facts.
In short, Sam is somewhere between a disgrace and a joke. A few
comments on the games:
Vucic-Sloan, 1986: Sloan uses a junk opening, the Englund Gambit,
but White does not know the refutation and allows him a good game.
Still, Sloan was losing by move 24, but White blundered with
24.Qxh6??. Instead White seems fine after 24.Qxf5+ Kg8 25.Kxg2, with a
probably winning edge.
Sloan-Browne, 1967: Black is simply winning from about move 18 on.
The prophylactic 25�h5! would have quashed White's dreams of
counterplay. After letting his win slip over moves 25-32, Black throws
away the draw with the inexplicable 37�Be7??. This isn't chess, this
is suicide.
Incidentally, contrary to Sloan's claim, he did not beat
"Grandmaster Walter Browne" here. Browne was not even an IM in 1967.
Makropoulos-Sloan, 1988: Can't comment here. There seem to be an
error in the score. After 28.Red1 Black has simply 28�Qxc5, taking the
en prise bishop.
Sloan-Sanchez, 1996: Sloan's Grob Attack finds Black unprepared, and
White gets a good game out of the opening. However, Sam got help with
23�Nc6?!. Instead, with 23�Nc5! 24.Qxc5 (24.Bxc5 Rxd5 25.Bxb4 Rxb5
-/+) 24�Nd3+! 25.cxd3 Rc8 Black could have turned the tables. And with
24.Ba7? Sloan flubbed his attack. Black might well have survived with
24�Kc8 instead of 24�Ka8??. Sloan should have played 24.c3.
These aren't really bad games, but they hardly merit the ballyhoo
Sloan gives them.

In the next round Sam in fact scored an upset victory over Cain, taking
advantage of Cain's depressed state after being exiled. I'm sure he'll
publish the details soon.

Kaarlo Schepel has discovered a typographical error in the score of
game number 3, which is my game against Makropoulos, who is now the
Acting Executive Director of FIDE. The move played in the game was
obviously 28. Rec1, not Red1, because otherwise I would just have
captured his bishop with Qxc5 either then or at several subsequent
points in the game.
Incidentally, the game continued for longer. The game continued down
to mate, which was reasonable because I had less than a minute on my
clock. Fortunately, I was able to checkmate him before my flag fell.

This group (RGCA) was too much quiet in the past times and your post can
open new perspectives. I would like to see here more "my best games"
from another people here in RGCA.
Now, I prefer to criticise them in order to show how difficult is to
play "our best games" and to k if there are misatkes in them. I hope
that did not avoid other people posting here their best games to be
disectioned (this group is RGCA, last "A" for analysis).
I have followed this "your best game" and it was spectacular but White
and black played many mistakes. Here you have my views:

Well, OK. Although your seven queens game seems somewhat contrived as
White could have won a lot more easily without allowing the extra
pawns to queen, plus only five queens were on the board at any one
time.
At first, I thought you were talking about the real "Immortal Five
Queens Game". Tim Krabbe has written an excellent article about that
game which is at http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess/al5qtxt.htm
That game is included in a book by Dumont as Alekhine-Gregoriev,
Moscow, 1915, but it has been proven that this game was just analysis
of what might have happened in a game Gergoriev-Alekhine (with
Alekhine as black), so now the game is given as "Alekhine - NN"
although the game was never really played.
