Subject: Rook and Pawn vs Queen in endgame.

I played the following game on ICC - not a particularly good game, as
there were lots of unforced errors. But the ending is interesting. Is
this winnable by White (which I was) or is it a draw? (In essence, I had
a queen and my opponent a pawn and rook.)
I know the 5-piece endgame tablebases would have this, but I don't have
them on this computer. But I was more interested in the generaliites
than in this particular game.

Probably wise -- that game isn't the best. :-) It looks like a tricky
ending and is some way beyond my ken; the fact that your king is close
to his pawn is probably in your favour.

White mates in 30. You need to stay close to the pawn because it's
tying up the black rook and can't be protected by the king at the
moment (66... Kf6?? 67.Qd4+ 1-0). This kind of endgame needs to be
played slowly and carefully because, superficially, all the moves look
equally pointless. :-)

Not too impressive. I think a couple of 1200 players could have done as
well.

Yes, after initially thinking I had an easy position, with a queen
generally far superior to a rook + pawn, I soon realised that it was far
from trivial.
