Subject: Request to chess book authors - make PGN's available!
This is a request to anyone who has wrote a chess book, or is thinking
of writing one. Could you please make the PGN files available for the
games in the book?

Despite sites like Chessgames.com, ChessBase, TWIC etc, it is often
difficult to find the PGNs of the games in many books. In a recent book
on the Smith Morra gambit, "The Morra Gambit: A dynamic weapon against
the Sicilian" by Hannes Langrock, it is not possible to download most of
the games. By the very nature of the Smith Morra gambit, it does not
tend to get played much at the very highest levels of chess, so is less
likely to be recorded on places like ChessBase, TWIC etc.

Why can't authors either put the books on a CD, or a web site (probably
the better/cheaper option)? Or why don't publishers put them on their
web sites?

I know PGNs are available for some of the well known books - Fischer's
60 memorable games for example, but it would be nice if one could be
sure to have the PGNs for all games in a book, so one can look through
them easily.

Today I've been trying to find a PGN for a game in a book on the French.
Despite the fact it was supposed to be the FIDE world championship, I
can't find it, although I think there may be an error in the book, or
the download site - more about that in another post!

I agree. It actually helps sell the book if you give out the PGN
files.

Here's an old site that has some famous books in PGN:

Yes, I suspect you are right. I think in the UK to put them on a CD
would not be a good idea, as that would then attract VAT (Value Added
Tax), whereas books are VAT free. But to put them on a web site would be
very easy.

Yes, I can imagine it does.
