As for lowly humans, it's just a fact that a "good" Bishop like this one is superior to a Knight, due to its longer legs -- it's ability to get around the board quicker -- and ability to attack from a safe distance. It is, in essence, the same reason a Rook is superior to a Knight. > > 25. In the game, I did snatch a couple of pawns like this; but the point is, White could have forcibly trapped the Knight -- winning a full piece instead. As I pointed out in my earlier comments, the real problem for Black was that his Knight was doomed as early as move 25 (had I spotted the correct follow-up to p-f4, which was B-c1). The secondary (i.e. less important) threats were the snatching of pawns, and the doubling of Rooks on the seventh rank. -- help bot

Here are a few comments based on Rybka (the free version) analysis: 5. c5 lost White a third of a pawn, apparently due to the /loss of time/ of this and the forced cxd6 next move; Black's reply, ...Bg4, gave back most of this, however. 7. ...the manuever ...Na6-b4-d3 was possible, snagging the fianchettoed Bishop in exchange for a mere Knight. 8. O-O was possible, despite the outright loss of a pawn. I did not examine this in detail to see "why". 14. ...Qc7 was a significant error, losing Bishop for Knight. 18. A better plan for White was f3 and then e4. My clever move, Nh6+, was a significant error-- wow! 21. ...f5 was necessary, here or on Black's next turn. 24. ...Nh3 was essentially "the losing move"; the Knight can be trapped as early as move 25, with correct play. 25. The overly-defensive ...Rb8 was awful; correct was ...Ng5. Throughout this part of the game, I (as White) overlooked the fact that I could /safely/ trap the Knight by playing f4 and then retreating my Bishop to c1 to cover f4 and thereby enable K-g2 without a nasty ...Nxf4+ in reply. Thus, my position score keeps going up and then back down, as I scoop up a pawn or two when I could have instead gobbled the scrumptious Knight at several different points. 32. Here again, I had the Knight cornered via Bc1!, but in the game Black had one final chance to extract his Knight and fight on; the terrible ...R/f-c8 clinches the game for White, for even the c-pawn is immune due to back-rank mate threats. 34. ...Rb8 was terrible; after ...Ng5 instead, White's Rook is taken out of play for a good long while though still a piece ahead. GetClub's Master level is painfully slow, but at least it did not lock up and refuse to move this time around. Note how Zebediah has used his chess engine to push the Advance level's rating down to ridiculous lows-- lower than even some of the much, much weaker levels. Now he seems to have switched to giving the Master level the same treatment. -- help bot
