Ishi Press is proud to announce the reprinting of My Best Games of Chess 1908-1923 by Alexander Alekhine. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0923891315 This edition includes a new introduction by Jerry Hanken. Although this book has been reprinted many times, this edition has larger, clearer and easier to read fonts. This is the book that every chess master and grandmaster has read and studied and every aspiring chess master should be reading. The author, a World Chess Champion, clearly explains the most complex and difficult concepts. Grandmaster Reuben Fine wrote that Alekhine's collection of best games was one of the three most beautiful that he knew. World Champion Garry Kasparov wrote, =93Alexander Alekhine is the first luminary among the others who are still having the greatest influence on me. I like his universality, his approach to the game, his chess ideas. I am sure that the future belongs to Alekhine chess.=94 Bobby Fischer wrote, =93He had great imagination. He could see more deeply into a situation than any other player in chess history. It was in the most complicated positions that Alekhine found his grandest concepts.=94 Chess Journalist Jerry Hanken writes, =93This book played a large part in my ultimate development as a Chess Master. The study of this book added nearly 400 points to my rating. The World Champion has more than a mere game collection here. There are superb insights into all aspects of the game. The Great Master uses a very practical set of ways to start the game and he explains them lucidly.=94 ISBN 0-923891-49-8

The problem is my mistake. My Best Games of Chess 1908-1923 by Alekhine is here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0923891498 It is in descriptive, the language our promising young chess masters are too stupid to learn how to read. Sam Sloan

Sometimes easier to use descriptive notation, but not usually, and the reader must continuously shift perspective from white's point of view, to black's; White's King Bishop 4 being Black King Bishop 5, etc. Algebraic, especially icon-algebraic, is readable by anybody using arabic numbers - and more moves can be carried in the head without diagrams. Publishers who do not follow this practice are (a) limiting their market, (b) behaving counter-intuitively to what readers want, and (c) likely making cheap facsimile editions, with as likely poor print and diagram quality. They should seek the stupid within. Why [other than that it is 'work'] not scan a descriptive notation book via OCR, then replace descriptive with algebraic notation - and might as well redo the diagrams too - even EPD2 is sufficient, and its free. This, IMO, would provide a useful service to the chess public who are condemned to struggle through bloody awful old descriptive game scores. Seems to me there would be a ready market for this /value-added/ activity, and I would buy such titles. If there were a few good ones, I could also ensure the idea received a review or 3 - and to lots of people - in effect, lots of free advertising for a welcome new publishing feature in chess. I would imagine the differential sales amount to be about 10 : 1 if such titles could be made algebraic over the likely sales volume for facsimile editions. But not taking in, and indeed, insulting the chess public, as here, is a poor start to Sam Sloan's new career as chess publisher. Instead of that, it seems to me a useful way to use this newsgroup for Sam Sloan to actually survey which titles other posters here would like to see in algebraic format - indeed, if short or long algebraic or icon-algebraic. And now that you are an old fart you are deaf or something: Is Ishi Press reprint of Alechine's "My ..." in the descriptive notation (then type: "Ishi Press reprint of Alechine's 'My ...' is in the descriptive notation"); or is it in algebraic (then type: "Ishi Press reprint of Alechine's 'My ...' is in the descriptive notation"). Do you hear me??!!!! Do YOU HEAR ME ???!!!!!!! Uph!, Wlod

I know and it is truly terrible that today's young chess masters are too stupid to learn how to read algebraic chess notation. When I was a little boy, I learned that one plus one equals two. Now, our youth needs a hand-held calculator to figure that out. Sam Sloan
