Shogi is the Japanese variety of chess. It is more complicated than
chess. It is the most popular game in Japan. There has been a great
increase in the popularity of shogi in Japan. According to surveys, a
whopping 70 % of all boys in Japan played shogi sometimes or often.
Among girls, 61% of all Japanese girls owned a shogi set.

The best shogi player in Japan is widely regarded as being the most
intelligent person in Japan.

The popular game and TV show, Pok?mon, is obviously derived from shogi
because, as in shogi, almost all of the basic pieces can evolve into a
stronger piece.

Shogi has a rook, a bishop, a knight, a king and pawns. Checkmate ends
the game. However, it also has a lance, a gold general, a silver
general, and a dragon. All but the king and the gold general can
promote to a stronger piece. A captured piece becomes part of the
enemy army and can be dropped back onto the board. The games last
longer, are more wide open and more complicated. In spite of being a
cousin of chess, it is radically different.

This DVD is 71 minutes. It explains the basic moves of the pieces,
basic strategies and basic openings, including the boat, the fortress
and the bear in the hole. Background music is gSakura, Sakurah, the
traditional Japanese gCherry Blossomh song.

Bwahaha, I love it when our great intellectual jb is wrong. "Sakura"
means "cherry tree", and "matsuri" means "festival". Both are probably
words of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test level 4, the easiest
level.

I will tell you what happened. jb saw on the internet "sakura matsuri
festival" translated as "cherry blossom festival" and hence thought
that "maturi" meant "blossom". Priceless!

You might also check the meaning of the word "sakurabana".

Best regards,

jb

Technically speaking, _sakura_ means "Cherry Trees",
not the blossoms. The _sakura_matsuri_ refers to blossoms.

Are you sure about this?

My wife, who is Japanese, disagrees.

Many Japanese are miseducated on this point. We need to
ask why the tune is cast in a minor key. This is due to the fact
that people notice cherry blossoms or fruit but do not pay much
attention to the trees which deliver those blossoms and fruit.
Timelessness of this melody also suggests the tree rather than
the transient blossoms. It is not essentially about the temporal
blossoms nor the perishable fruit. You can say that temporality
suggests a minor key, however temporality could also be major.
Your wife may lack a proper education, concerning Japanese.

"tweet" <[email protected] > wrote:

When Japanese hear _sakura_ they can interpret according
to various parts or the whole thing, i.e. _sakura_no_ki_. If, by
various parts, can be _sakura_no_mi_ (_sakurambo_) or can
be _sakura_no_hana_ (cherry blossoms). After all is said and
done, the end of this discussion will associate _sakura_ with
_sakura_no_ki_ which is the entire thing altogether, and not just
limited to the blossoms or fruit. There is a tendency to apprehend
the whole by assembly of parts, then acknowledgement of whole.
Getting to that wholistic apprehension simply takes some time.
