We could save us all a lot of time if in replying to any message we delete the previous message in the reply box. Yes it does take a few seconds but it makes it so much easier to study a stream of replies. Otherwise you have to scroll past all the old messages with each reply. I am suprised google doesn't make this the default. It also takes oodles less storage space for the group and makes it much more efficient to archive the group, Carol M

Quoting is a good habit, mimicking a real life discussion between people, making it clear to what exactly you responded. "Quoting the text of the articles you are responding to helps the reader follow the thread that your posting becomes a part of. The reader does not need to look back at the previous articles to understand the context that makes yours meaningful." to quote someone else :) Snipping is good practice however. Snipping is somewhat different than deleting. Deleting the whole original message you respond to is not a good idea, because - not all newsreaders or archive thread or queue in the same way, making it less obvious or even impossible to find out to what or whom you responded; - most people use the newsserver from their provider, not Google; and not all newsservers have the same retention time, making original messages disappear (and with it the meaning of the answer); - if you crosspost for a _good_ reason, people in the other newsgroup want to know what ist was your reacted to. > I am suprised google doesn't make this the default. Google doesn't always thread in a correct way also. One of the problems of Google is that if you change the subject line, Google won't be threading it correctly anymore. It will become an orphaned message, no part of the original queue anymore. Such a message without the original quote would be worthless, as it would be unclear what you were responding to. > It also > takes oodles less storage space for the group No need to fear the size of a Usenet text message. Rest assured the text based groups are not the priy worry of the providers and their newsservers. Let's talk about binaries groups for a change. -- CeeBee "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

I'll remember your advice whenever I feel the urge to talk about it here.
