Subject: Great Sacrificial Game (that was never played)
The following came up as a variation in a recent game in one of our club
matches. I thought it was really spectacular. Two reasons for posting it
here. One, just to share it, the other to ask if anyone in these NGs knows
whether this game has actually been played. It looks uncannily like
something from the 19th Century but I can't find it at chesslab.com or
chessgames.com. I was wondering if Black had booked up and not quite
remembered his homework.

1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Nf3 Nc6 4. e4 Bc5 5. Nxe5 Bxf2+ 6. Kxf2 Nxe5 7. d4
Nfg4+ 8. Kg3 Qf6 9. dxe5 Qf2+ 10. Kxg4 d5+ 11. Kh5 h6 12. g3 g6+ 13. Kh4
g5+ 14. Kh5 Qb6 heading for g6 and mate is unavoidable

A truly great game, but it was never played! In the actual game Black lost -
can you guess where he went wrong? It's painful to consider.

cheers

White will not have problems if 9.Qd2 or 9.Qe1 was played.

The following game used the same start
[Event "Tromsoe op-B"]
[Site "Tromsoe"]

[White "Steinkellner, Rudolf"]
[Black "Pedersen, Johnny"]

but closer still was the game
[Event "corr"]

[White "tinho, Fernando"]
[Black "Ewald, H."]
[Result "0-1"]

However there are 4 games in my database where White played 8 Kg1 and then
won.... so I would guess that that is where he went wrong....

That's the kind of move where we can no see all and the difference
between a win and a lost (two aparently similar moves) can be pure "luck".

thanks for the example,
