I have a question about the ECO. Whats the logic behind the organization of the openings? For example, if I want to find an opening that I don't know the name of whats the quickest way to find it? These question are with the book in mind not a computer Database. -- Thanks, John http://growwithchess.com/

These question are with the >book in mind not a computer Database. Generally, the letters are for different types of first moves. Within each letter, the "90-99" openings are thought to be the sharpest main lines, while the "9s" (99, 89, etc.) tend to represent the current main line within a variation. For example, B99 (89?) would be the Najdorf Sicilian's main line, because that is "sharpest" in the view of most GMs, etc. A59 might be the main line of the Benko for the same reason. -- Ray Gordon, Author The OFFICIAL Ray Gordon Blog: http://moderncaveman.typepad.com

I'm going to post a blog on this today so others can learn this to. I found several websites that brokedown the codes but couldn't find a general pattern. Thank you.
