A chess game is like a round in boxing: the pleasure comes from knocking out opponents capability of having control over the situation, with the difference, that in chess the round begins already with knocking out one's own capability of having control over the situation (thanks to the rules of the game). Chess can be compared to anything where you have people going against each other in something which is what makes it humorous. Chess is like billiards. Maurice Ashely always says it's like just about everything... soccer, basketball, boxing and football. I'm still waiting around to see when bowling will be using the elo system. lol!

What I intended to tell was: I find it very funny, that we tease our brains to develop rules for games with the only goal of knocking out our ability to control the game and to predict the impact of own actions on the game outcome according to the motto "no risk, no fun". In boxing it is your opponent which knocks you out, so the only risk you must consider is what he is doing, because you are usually in full control over what you are doing yourself. In chess there is the additional risk, that you knock yourself out by a bad move not beeing able to see why. It is as if you would punch yourself from time to time during the boxing round going sometimes down due to own hit. Isn't that funny? Claudio

Replace 'boxing' by 'chess' and 'knocks you out' by 'mates you' and this is a general rek about chess as well. > In chess there is the additional risk, that you knock yourself out by a bad > move not beeing able to see why. No, it's comparable to boxing, where you didn't pay enough attention to your defense, or you fail to dodge the right moment - and got hit. In chess it also always takes the opponent to take advantage of a bad move - if he doesn't, the bad move has no consequence for the fight, the same way a bad positioning of your fists, might not lead to getting hit, because the other one didn't realize it. > Isn't that funny? Ahem, no, I am afraid it's not. Greetings, Ralf
