Subject: Can anyone explain all the titles?

I'm not sure of the regulations governing all the various titles that chess players get for tournament performance. For instance, what's an FM or an FIDE Master? I think I know what a GM and an IM is, but I'm not sure what the rules are for achieving the "norm" for one. I was looking recently at the Women's European championship and the list of players was an array of WM's, WIM's, WGM's as well as IM's and GM's. What's the difference? Are the standards for achieving one or the other the same or not? Thanks! Phil

to sumize: in order of importance: awarded by fide: GM= grand master= 2500+ (+ 3 GM norms, performances of 2550+ against strong enough opposition) IM= international master = 2400+ (+3IM norms, performances of 2450+ against strong enough opposition) WGM=woman grand master= 2300+ (+3WGM norms, performances of 2400+ against strong enough opposition) FM= fide master = 2300+ WIM=woman international master= 2200+ (+3 WIM norms, performances of 2250+ ) CM= candidate master = 2200+ WFM= woman fide master= 2100+ WCM= woman candidate master= 2000+ not awarded by fide: NM= national master = only some countries have these and the way to obtain them are not the same everywhere in usa you get it when you are 2200+ but in belgium for example you need to win national championship to get it the rest are not real titles but a way to classify players used in the usa: expert class(or candidate master class)=2000-2200 a-class= 1800-2000 b-class=1600-1800 c-class=1400-1600 d-class=1200-1400 e-class=1000-1200 f-class=800-1000 notes: - there are other ways to get some titles too, mainly by winning some big tournamenys -woman can also achieve male titles - the norm rules are more complex than noted here - cm and wcm are new titles I think cause I never heard of those - you can also achieve titles in correspondence chess; in composing chess studies and even in solving chess studies. - you also have HGM and HIM, those are honorary titles given for performance in the past "Philip Feeley" <[email protected] > schreef in bericht news:dnjve.91813$El.20911@pd7tw1no... > I'm not sure of the regulations governing all the various titles that > chess players get for tournament performance. I believe the page below has all the details you need. It's not an easy read, though. http://www.fide.com/official/handbook.asp?level=b0101

Simple? They don't explain much, and certainly not what the rules are about the different titles. All they do is provide a bunch of lists.
