Subject: Background for an endgame combination

To my surprise, I found a position from my old game in an Italian combination page: http://tinyurl.com/42w3o combination 499 Kari Hoijarvi - Renus Ramos, Boston 1987 White:Kc3 Rd2 Pa2 f5 h2 Black:Kd5 Ra8 Pc4 d3 h6 Black to move and win. Black played Rf8? after which I could sacrifice a pawn with a2-a4, Ra2, a5, a6, a7 etc. forcing him to play Ra8. Game ended as a draw. Back home, I was sure I was lost, and it didn't take too long to figure out what black should have done. Later back in Finland I showed this to Thomas Ristoja, the combination page editor of "Suomen Shakki" magazine, who published it. So now, over fifteen years later, somebody looked for combination material, and understandably could not translate the comments. Enjoy! Kari

Kb4 Kd4 (hardly any combination at all). I suppose White last move was f5 that jinxed your oppoent It's amazing what a Passed Pawn can do to your Chess Thinking (Black had the choice of Checking but instead choose to went after the Pawn). Perfect mental diversion! > > So now, over fifteen years later, somebody > looked for combination material, and > understandably could not translate the > comments. Enjoy! Shouldn't it be eighteen years now (Or was it published by "Suomen Shakki" magazine in 2002)?

The editor also missed the best line with counter rook sac: White:Kc3 Rd2 Pa2 f5 h2 Black:Kd5 Ra8 Pc4 d3 h6 1...Ra3+ 2 Kb4 Kd4! 3 Kxa3 c3 4 f6! cxd2 5 f7 d1Q 6 f8Q but black should still win the queen ending.
