Subject: A Small Controversy about Ben Finegold
On Monday, May 16, 2005 I broadcast on my TV show, Chess Lesson #2.
This chess lesson is now posted at
http://www.ishipress.com/samchess2.asf

This chess lesson discusses a basic trap in the Albin Counter Gambit
where Black wins by promoting to a knight with check. This was
discussed extensively on rec.games.chess.politics

About two months later, Ben Finegold came out with a new chess video
entitled "Chess with Ben Finegold: Chess Tactics for Scholastic
Players - Vol 1". His video shows EXACTLY THE SAME TRAP.

The trap is of course well known to all chess masters. The question
is: Did Ben Finegold take my idea, or is it jjust a coincidence that
his video shows exactly the same trap as my video?

And that trap's known by, in addition to
'all chess masters', Sam Sloan.

The answer is obvious. Anybody who has seen the 'Sam Sloan Show' will
inevitably ask himself what he can do to become more like this great
role model of Merkin Youth. Ben Finegold's answer was the simplest and
most efficient: Do as the Sloanaboars do; emulate the great master,
hoping to be admired by young and old like he is.

I recently saw Ben Finegold in NYC and noticed that he no longer combs
his hair, doesn't wash his face, leaves his fly open, and dresses in
Salvation Army style. He told me that next month he was planning a
trip to the far East, where he is intending to visit 3 bordellos per
day and propose riage to every whore under the age of 20 that he
can find. If he does this for 6 weeks he thinks that he will probably
find a bride. If Sloan, the great master, can do it 8 times then, he
thinks, he should be able to do it once, given enough time.

When he returns he will apply for a slot on Brooklyn Public Access
Cable and compete with the great Sam Sloan directly.

Since the trap was well known before both your online lesson and his video
existed, there's no chance anyone is copying anyone.

Oh good God Sam,
Are you hallucinating? First off, that trap can be found in many many chess
books. I have it in five different books that I own. Second, do you know how
long it takes to produce a video? I'm sure Ben was collecting material for
his video long before your lessons.
